UDP News: Winter 2012
This April, “Project Safe Haven: Vertical Evacuation on the Washington Coast” will be awarded a Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC) 2012 National Award in Excellence for mitigation at the 2012 National Earthquake Conference in Memphis, Tennessee.
Project Safe Haven is a coordinated effort between the UW Institute for Hazards Mitigation and Planning, county and state emergency management officials, and tribal emergency management agencies to develop a community responsive vertical evacuation strategy, in partnership with local residents, along the Washington Coast.
Project Safe Haven UW team members include UDP faculty members Bob Freitag (planner) and Ron Kasprisin (urban designer); CM faculty member Omar El-Anwar (engineering); UDP Master of Urban Planning alumni Jeana Wiser (project lead), Katherine Killebrew, Amanda Engstfeld, and Tricia DeMarco; and UDP Master of Urban Planning students Christopher Scott and Josh Vitulli.
John Schelling of Washington Emergency Management will be present at the 2012 National Earthquake Conference in April to accept the award for the entire Project Safe Haven team.
