MUP Admission: Frequently Asked Questions
The following FAQs are for the MUP program. For admission information about other degree programs, please check on their respective websites.

What is the deadline for applying to the MUP program?
For Autumn quarter admission, completed application materials are due February 1. The deadline for international applicants is November 1 for receipt of the Application for Admission to the Graduate School, all official transcripts, and test scores. The remaining application materials must arrive no later than February 1. For Winter quarter admission, application materials are due September 15. Late applications will be considered on a space available basis only. Since GRE scores are required, applicants should take the exams early enough so the scores will reach UW before the deadlines.

Where should I send my hard copy application materials?
Departmental Application materials must be sent directly to:
MUP Program Admissions Committee
Department of Urban Design and Planning
University of Washington
410 Gould Hall, Box 355740

I applied to the MUP program last year, but was not admitted. How do I reapply?
If you would like to reapply to the program, please send us a letter or email requesting us to reactivate your application, indicating when you applied. Application materials are held for only one year unless we receive a request from you to save them.

My recommenders are not submitting their letters online and will be sending their letters separately, so I can't send all my letters and transcripts in the same package. What should I do?
We advise that you send all your hardcopy materials in one complete package if possible. However if you cannot, then you should send all loose application materials to the following address. If your recommenders are submitting hard copy letters, they may be sent either by you in the envelope sealed by the recommender or directly by the recommender. Any materials being submitted in hard copy format including transcripts, letters of recommendation, and work samples should be sent to the following address:
MUP Program Admissions Committee
Department of Urban Design and Planning
University of Washington
410 Gould Hall, Box 355740
Seattle, WA 98195

Do I need to take the GREs and what is the minimum score? Do I need to take any of the subject tests?
Yes, the GRE exam is required of all applicants to the MUP program unless the applicant has already earned a doctoral degree. There is no minimum score required. The subject test section of the exam is not required. GRE tests in the United States are administered many times each year; please check with your testing center. The tests are given at various locations throughout the world as well. Although recent scores are preferred, tests taken within the past five years are acceptable. Scores must be forward by ETS (Educational Testing Service) directly to the University of Washington.

Do I need to take the TOEFL exam? Can the TOEFL exam be waived in certain cases for international applicants?
Prospective international, immigrant, and permanent resident students whose native language is other than English and who have not received bachelor's or master's degrees from institutions in countries where English is the native language are required to submit their scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum allowable scores are: 500 TOEFL, 173 TOEFLC. A minimum score of 550 TOEFL or 213 TOEFLC is preferred. Students admitted with scores below 580 TOEFL or 237 TOEFLC will be tested for English proficiency upon arrival and will be required to complete any assigned ESL courses along with their regular academic program. Please see the Application for Admission to the Graduate School for more details, https://www.grad.washington.edu/applForAdmiss/.

Do you provide financial support for international students?
International applicants must be able to provide their own financial support. Departmental financial support is extremely rare.

What forms do I fill out to apply for financial aid?
The MUP Program Application form includes an application for financial support section. U.S. citizens should also complete and submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The aid form can be found here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

When will I know if I have received financial aid?
The UW Financial Aid Office usually sends award letters in June prior to Autumn admission.

Do I need to submit a portfolio or a writing sample?
Applicants for the MUP program are invited to include an exhibit of their work but one is not required. The exhibit should illustrate their interests and abilities in areas related to urban design and planning. This can be an essay, a paper, a publication, a report, or a project for which the person applying to the program has had major responsibility. The exhibit will not be returned unless an addressed, stamped envelope is included. It should be in hard copy format, and needs to fit in a letter-sized file.

Do I need to request an interview before I apply to the MUP program?
No, but you may choose to visit us anytime.

How can I check on my application status?
Feel free to call or email us if you are uncertain whether your application is complete.
